Maruyama created the image of ruins in a grassland surrounded by high mountains, which was located near central Norway within the Arctic Circle. The site resembles the scenery in her hometown in eastern Japan before it was drastically changed by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear plant accidents. This work expresses the silent state after the tsunami subsided.
People as living beings face the great force of nature so that they can recreate a new relationship by first reaching out from the ruins and calling out in Norwegian, “HØRER DU MEG?,” meaning “Can you hear me?”

The human species does not reign over all creation. We are at a stage when we must fundamentally reconsider our past lifestyles and ideas. That is, we should create a relationship whereby we can coexist flexibly with the global environment, rather than challenging or holding down nature as we have done in the past.
